Farmers in Kisii County have been urged to practice crop rotation to curb food shortage in the region and overcome weeds.

According to Nyamarambe sub agricultural officer, Lucas Gwaro, farmers in the area has repeatedly planted one type of crop.

“Crop rotation is an important exercise since it does away with weeds and pests,” advised Gwaro.

He added that following climate change in the world, farmers should venture into different types of farming and rotate crops from one shamba to another.

He also urged farmers to use certified seeds and practice the recommended farming practices by consulting agricultural extension officers.

The officer noted that most farmers experienced low products in the area last year due the disease which attacked maize last year.

He further noted that farmers can keep track of weather patterns and grow crops that are drought resistant, thus require less rainfall.
