Kisii county commissioner Kula Hache has assured prisoners at Kisii Main Prison of the national government’s commitment to uplift incarceration conditions currently dogged by massive congestion.

Addressing the prisoners on Wednesday at Kisii GK prison where she leads senior county security committee members to personally donate books to prisoners, the commissioner said the move was born out of humanitarian reasons.

The county commissioner clarified the donation was for the prisoners and not for institution disclosing the occasion was used to engage with them on the need to shun illicit brews among other crimes.

“We have come with donations of books to prisoners so that they can continue with their learning activities, we challenge them to make sure that they change their ways so that when they get out there they are transformed,” said Madam Commissioner

Siomi Mohammed, the prison’s Commander revealed that soon the congestion at the incarceration facility will be drastically reduced owing to the near completion of a new prison at Kilgoris, Transmara.

The commander attributed the congestion to the shortage, reluctance and poor remuneration of voluntary lawyers by the state at Nyamira county law courts.

He further explained the prison administration had given views to the Power of Mercy Committee geared towards the introduction of radical reforms on death sentence and condemned prisoners.

According to Siomi, Inadequate state counsels also complicated matters making murder cases drag on for months with the resultant incarceration of the suspects.

The inmates had raised concerns on the issue with some alleging they had been dispossessed of their family land while in imprisonment, courtesy of some corrupt syndicates at the land registry.
