Kisii County Government has been asked to ensure family planning commodities and supplies are availed to all public health care facilities across the county.

Daraja United Women and Youth Empowerment (DAWOYE) Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Winfridah Abuya has challenged the county government to also consider allocating enough resources towards family planning commodities as part of the efforts to address women's unmet needs for family planning.

Speaking to this writer in her Kisii town office on Tuesday morning, Abuya said failure by the county government to ensure there are adequate family planning commodities in all the health care facilities led to women in the area giving birth to many children whose needs they cannot meet.

Mrs Abuya regretted that lack of family planning commodities at health facilities was an obstacle to the uptake of family planning services among women of reproductive age in the county.

She said the situation was so worrying that majority of the women from the community have no choice or reliable alternative family planning services to control unintended pregnancies, leading to giving birth to many children who they cannot provide for.

"Despite the fact that family planning remains a right of men and women to decide the number, timing, and spacing of their children, the situation in Kisii is different since many women in the region who are married or living with men, report that their needs for contraceptives remain unmet due to lack of adequate family planning commodities in the health facilities," said Abuya.
