The Kisii County government has temporary closed five major quarries following the death of a quarry worker on Wednesday.
County Director for Environment Samson Bokea said this was meant to avert loss of lives.
He issued a warning to residents in the county to keep off quarries especially this time when rains have begun to avoid deaths.
Mr Bokea also warned the residents against sheltering under trees and caves after a quarry worker was killed when he sheltered at a quarry.
“We have ordered the quarries to be closed with the El Nino alert because the rains have already started. We will be experiencing high rainfall and we have to avert loss of life by closing these quarries,” he said.
“The quarries pose a threat to the workers and they have to be closed until the heavy rain stops,” added Boeka.
The five quarries closed are Kiogoro, Botori, Nyabigena, Nyamaruma and Riamang’ata.
The quarry worker who died on Wednesday was crushed to death by a boulder when it fell on him as he sheltered from the heavy rain.
