Kisii Teaching and Referral hospital is one of the biggest hospitals in Nyanza region. It is well known for its modern health facilities and drugs but not washrooms facilities.
Kisii level 5 outpatient department has only five toilets which serve both the male and the female. There are no specific toilets for women or men.
The toilets have no running water forcing patients to use water gallons to clean up after use.
This has made the hospital charge its patients toilet fee, of Sh10 per head, to pay the workers who help in cleaning.
Hospital are known to have special washroom which favour the physically challenged but Kisii level 5 has no single special toilet.
"The hospital has good services but the washrooms are not up to standard. They need to consider the physically handicapped patients," a patient said.
There is no privacy in the washrooms as children, women, and men will all 'fight' for a chance.
Efforts to speak to the director of health bore no fruits as he was out of the county for meetings.
