Kisii Governor James Ongwae says he supports the looming countrywide strike by teachers, set to start on Monday. Speaking in Tendere during the funeral of Obadiah Mbaka, a teacher, Ongwae, himself a former Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) secretary, said he knew that the demands of the teachers are genuine. The governor said the terms and conditions of service of teachers in the country are wanting and called on the national government to act quick on the matter. “I am a former TSC secretary I want to say this, your requests are genuine and it is a genuine problem," the county boss said. "Your terms of service as teachers should be a mirror of terms of service in the national government and I want to call on the government to be involved in clear negotiations with because you said your intentions early enough,” he added. Kisii County Senator Chris Obure, deputy governor Joash Maangi and women representative Mary Otara reiterated the same, saying it is the parents and children that will feel the pain of the strike and called on the government to act fast and avert the strike. The government has now invited the Kenya National Union of Teachers officials to a negotiating table this weekend in an effort to avert the go slow. KNUT secretary general Wilson Sossion has, however, insisted that the strike notice still stands.
