Built in 1916 as a military hospital, Kisii Level Five Hospital has undergone many transformations from a district hospital to a level 5 and now a teaching and referral hospital.
This was facilitated by a memorandum of understanding between the county government and Kisii University in line with an act that was tabled in the county assembly that sought to upgrade the hospital into a teaching and referral hospital.
According to the county minister of health Sarah Omache, it is the congestion of patients in the wards and the need of specialised personnel to deal with health issues that saw the need of upgrading the facility into a level six hospital.
She added, “We should give the preventive aspect of life a priority which will enable us live healthy lives.”
The governor pledged that to upgrade the facility, all the financial support needed in the on-going renovations will be made available in time and the issue of staffing will be dealt with.
“There are several projects that the county government is funding including a pharmacy store that is nearing completion, renovation of surgical ward for children and a car park that can accommodate at least 70 cars,” said the governor.
He added, “In the next financial year, an anatomy department will be started and a complete diagnostic digital laboratory that will be equipped to capacity to offer the best services to the populace.”
