Otenyo Nyamaterere was a Kisii warrior who was born in the year 1908 and he came from Kitutu region in Bogeka clan.
He killed a white man by the name Northcoth who the Kisii people called “Nyarigoti”.
Otenyo used to hide in bushes and he only walked with a spear with him.
Northcote was sent to Kisii from Kisumu where he was an administrator, and he used to ride in his mule.
One day as he was riding on his mule, Otenyo saw him.
He griped his spear and waited till his target was near enough.
Before Northcote could get his gun out, Otenyo was there with his spear and it ribbed through his right shoulder and he fell down.
Northcote's shoulder was badly damaged but he survived.
Otenyo went back to the bush commonly known as “egetutu” in kisii language which was his hiding place.
Immediately information spread all over Kisii land that Nyarigoti (Northcote) had been killed by Otenyo.
Songs and dance were heard in the entire Kisii land, but in the real sense Northcote had not died.
Otenyo was then arrested, tried in public and then shot dead at the Kisii stadium.
His head was transported to London as evidence that he had been murdered.
Otenyo’s headless body was buried in Manga escarpment.
