Kisii County residents have challenged MCAs to execute their oversight role seriously by putting the county government on toes.

This comes days after the auditor general’s office released a controversial report that linked MCAs with acceptance of offers from the executive that included Sh1.3 million night allowances for night-outs when they visited Mombasa early this year, allowances to minority and majority leaders plus the speaker that totalled to Sh450,000 despite having official cars.

On Monday, residents accused the MCAs of failing to execute their duties of oversight by allegedly 'teaming up with the executive to loot'.

“We are very disappointed that the MCAs are not performing their job properly. They are colluding with the executive to loot public funds and that is completely unacceptable. They are the people entrusted with accountability and therefore they have no option,” said Mr Elias Makori at Kenyenya in a fundraiser.

They questioned the awarding of tenders in the county assembly and urged MCAs to be sincere with their roles of fighting impunity and discrimination.

“They are the people who should protect our people from any discrimination. Awarding of tenders is questionable because the most competent people are ignored,” added Mr Julius Ondimu.

However, majority chief whip Henry Moracha, who was in attendance, urged residents ‘not to jump into conclusions’ and wait for discussion of the report in the assembly.

“We haven’t gotten a chance to scrutinise the report but it is important we give the assembly time to go through the report and give its recommendations,” he said.
