A number of Kisii men are reportedly marrying women from outside their tribe due to increasing cases of Female Genital Mutilation, claims Nyamira Women Representative.
The statement comes after Anti-FGM board in conjunction with the offices of Women Representatives from various regions has embarked on a series of anti-FGM campaigns across the country.
Speaking to the reporter on the phone on Sunday, Mrs Chae said many women from the region had reverted to marrying women outside the region who had not undergone FGM making the number of single women in the region rise steadily.
“I am worried that our men are now moving out of the community to marry girls who haven’t gone through FGM. This is true based on the information we are getting from local authorities and it may escalate in future,” Chae said.
“Our girls are going through FGM, which has contributed to a high number of most Kisii ladies ending up being single mothers because some of them are subjected to FGM,” added Mrs Chae.
Mrs Chae urged members of Abagusii community to accept the reality and support anti-FGM campaigns to rescue more girls from getting frustrated in the future.
“FGM is a tragedy in our community and to avert incidents of our girls being rejected for marriage because they have gone through a cut, we must rise up and oppose this for the sake of our children’s future," said Chae.
"We all know the repercussions of FGM and that is why many men are avoiding future problems by marrying girls from outside the community,” she added.
