The ongoing heavy rains in Kisii and Narok has paralysed transport along the Kisii-Nairobi highways after flash floods swept away a part of the road at Suswa on Friday.
Stranded passengers at Kisii bus terminus had to pay double charges for their transport to Nairobi.
As usual, the cost ranges at Sh800 but due the heavy rains, the prices hiked to Sh1500.
According to the transport companies in Kisii, the Kisii-Nairobi route has been unpredictable and dangerous to use, therefore, forcing them to use an alternative longer route to avoid accidents.
"We now use the Kericho route which is much longer which has caused the hike in bus fare. Using the Kisii-Nairobi route through Narok is very risky.
"In a matter of minutes the floods might wash everything away. But the cost differs with the sacco," said Abraham Mutiso, an Easy coach driver.
Some travellers had to cancel their journey as the hiked fare was unplanned for.
"I cannot go ahead with my journey because i had not planned for this kind of price. I have postponed it till the rainy season ends," said Ann Kerubo, a stranded traveller.
Kenya Meteorological Department had earlier warned about the flash floods in Narok and Nyanza region.
