Parents from Kisii County have been urged to give education first priority as a way of equipping young ones with knowledge that can enable them survive in harsh economic conditions.

This comes few days after area Deputy county commissioner (Educational matters) Diana Wekesa faulted parents for failing to give their young ones mandatory education.

Speaking on Monday at Ogembo market, area women Representative Mary Otara urged parents to invest in education besides taking advantage of free primary education.

She expressed her concern over claims that some parents subjecting their young ones to menial jobs instead of sending them to school.

“Education is always a key to opportunities. With it, it is unlikely that we are to suffer in life because knowledge can help you handle a lot in life,” Mrs. Otara said.

“It is the responsibility of parents to take education seriously. Those who are subjecting school children to menial jobs must be very careful because that is contrary to our constitution,” she added.

The ODM legislator asked provincial administration to intervene and rescue school children who were doing odd jobs for survival despite of free primary education and subsidized secondary education.

“We need the provincial administrators to help us deal with this puzzle. Every child has an opportunity to get elementary education. Local authorities should help us fight the menace,” she said.
