Kisii County environment officer Eritus Kabari on Friday said water springs have been contaminated by human wastes.

Kabari said environment officers took water samples from all the water sources within Kisii town and the results showed that the water is not safe for consumption.

“We took water samples for testing and we found most water sources are contaminated by bacteria mainly from human wastes. For this reason, therefore, I am calling on residents to treat water by using chemicals or boil before consumption,” he said.

He said toilets near water sources and sewage pipes passing near water sources should be removed to prevent the outbreak of diseases.

“Children are at risk because they may be tempted to drink water at water springs which are unsafe for use. We are making efforts to have pit latrines near water sources destroyed,” he noted.
