Residents of Kisii town and its suburbs have been warned against worshiping in churches that are spearheaded by rogue preachers.

This comes a day after worshippers in Mwembe estate evicted a pastor on claims that he has been having affairs with married women and using the tithe given by his followers for personal gains.

Police boss Tom Mutisya on Monday challenged residents against giving attention to such preachers without scrutinising them, including knowing their background and previous records.

He said solving such cases by use of police officers becomes much complicated, and the only remedy to that was to take precautions.

“I have been solving funny cases regarding pastors who are defrauding their followers. These cases are becoming rampant in town and there is a need for us to find a lasting solution to this predicament,” he said.

“It is difficult for police officers to handle such cases and the only way we can deal with it is by encouraging residents to be cautious of the rising numbers of churches, some used by people for personal gains,” he added.

However, the OCPD said his officers would not hesitate to come to the rescue of residents who may find themselves in the hand of such preachers.

“That doesn’t mean we will not respond to calls over the same issue. Whoever tries to obtain money through unjustifiable means will face the full force of the law though it is difficult when people use the name of the Lord to benefit themselves,” he said.
