Students and other members of Kisii University enjoyed a rare opportunity to purchase fish at low prices after a bumper harvest from the region.

Kisii Farm Department harvested fish in large numbers at the ponds in the institution, after a year of fish farming.

The fish are meant to be sold to the students and the university fraternity at large cheaply.

This was meant to promote consumption of proteins hence health living, with the fish prices ranging from Sh50 to 150 according to their sizes.

Compared to the main fish market in Kisii, where they cost as high as Sh500, the university’s prices are very low and it will only sell fish within its environs.

“Compared to the previous harvest we made early last year, fish production has increased to a good number. It’s above average,” Charles Ayage, the head of the Farm Department office said.

The students had an added advantage as the university mess bought the fish in bulk, cooked them and sold the ready fish.

“I am very happy as I will now buy fish and enjoy my maize meal. No Sukuma Wiki for today!” a first year student, Benson Ong’ai said.
