A group of students from Mwembe estate have lost valuables worth thousands of shillings following a night raid in their hostels by anonymous gangs.
According to the victims, about five gangsters entered Hillcrest Hostels in Mwembe estate on Thursday night through anonymous means because there was no indication of breaking through the fence or the gate of the hostels.
Victims were ordered to lie down as they looted their properties indiscriminately with those who resisted the order beaten and tied outside the hostel.
“We normally leave our doors open because the compound is closed from outside and it is intact because of the wire mesh. They entered in compound at 1am and ordered us to lie down as they looted. Those who failed to obey their orders were beaten,” said Brenda Otieno.
According to the students, the looting went on for almost an hour with the attackers carrying with them gas cookers, TV sets, radio and laptops with their mobile phones not spared either.
“They took many items but mostly electronics. Some of us have lost laptops and mobile phones with others have lost their gas cookers and money. They intimidated us for an hour or so,” added Victor Ogari.
Kisii OCPD Tom Mutisya confirmed having received the report from students and asked them to give the police time to investigate the theft with the compound’s caretaker asked to record a statement.
“I have received the complaint from the students and our officers will conduct investigations immediately. I have ordered the caretaker to record a statement since he is responsible of closing the gates of the hostel,” he said.
