Those people who are addicted to drugs would get free counselling in Kisii, and this programme will start from institutions of higher learning.
This is according to the Kisii University Coordinator Earnest Nyandwaro who also indicted that cases of drug abuse in Kisii are on the rise and an affirmative action should be employed to deal with the problem.
Nyandwaro said through Kisii University in conjunction with National Agency for the Campaign against Drug Abuse (NACADA), they would help students and other people nursing drug and alcohol issues.
“Drug abuse in Kisii is on alarming portion and therefore urgent measures need to be employed to confront the menace. We will counsel students of higher learning institutions starting with Kisii University so that those affected can be put under special description on what they will do to revert,” the coordinator said.
He said the programme that will be jointly rolled out by the University and NACADA would address drug and substance abuse and escalating effects in the county whereby those who need long-term attention will be referred to rehabilitation centres.
Nyandwaro said drug and substance abuse is a national challenge because there is poor service delivery in most work places due to addictions among employees.
Meanwhile, the institution’s chaplain Father Nyandwaro has urged Kisii residents to find alternative ways of generating income to alcohol brewing.
