A disagreement is brewing between the Kisii University's management and the students' union over the coordination of the much anticipated annual cultural week.

The annual event which is scheduled for early October is expected to attract a number of celebrities with Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar expected to be a chief guest.

Student union chairman Rodgers Nyanumba on Wednesday threatened to lead the union in pulling out from the main organising committee over what he termed as "intimidation" by the management.

“We are the sponsors of the event and therefore we should own it. We have sourced for funds all over and now somebody wants to own it. That is intimidation and as comrades we are ready to fight to the end or pull out. The finances should be controlled by us,” he said.

According to him, the institution's management should withdraw its membership from the main organising committee and play a supervisory role.

"We need them but not in the committee because they are the supervisors. Matters monetary should be left to students. We understand how to hire security and set other logistics therefore the management should keep off," he added.

However, the institution’s dean of students Gladys Osoro insisted that the presence of management was mandatory since the management had subsidised the event.

“You cannot dismiss the management because the student body contributes only half of the budget. We have too invited a key speaker whom the institution facilitates hence the demand by the union is null and void,” she said.

The event is said to have a budget of over Sh3 million.
