Kisii taxi operators have accused area police officer of harassment and are now calling for authorities to sort out the issue so that they can carry out their business with ease.
According to some taxi operators, they are always arrested without any mistake and normally the police want bribes in order for them to be freed.
Speaking at Kisii county hall when they met officials from the Ministry of Transport, the operators led by their chairperson Antony Kiganda said in the past few months they have been counting losses due to the unfavorable business environment.
“One taxi driver in Kisii town can be arrested more than twice a day and in both incidents the police demand for bribes so we want that to stop,” said Kiganda.
They also accused the area police commander of not controlling the officers who were soliciting for bribes.
“We want to get assurance from both the county and national government that the habit will stop for us to start our business as usual,” he added.
The Ministry of Transport led by Kisii county coordinator Alice Mogere assured the taxi operators that smooth operations in their business will resume as they are going to take action.
“Any police found taking bribe should be reported immediately to us then the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) will prosecute them," said Mogere.
