Misunderstandings between university administrations and students, according to students, has been sighted as the major cause of the conflicts.

However, Kisii University has experienced minimal riots since it was chartered in 2013.

It was only in March 2014 that the institution was shut down for about two weeks after students went on a rampage over hiked fees for industrial attachment and accommodation challenges. Since then, student unrest has never been experienced.

The university students say the administration has had a good relationship with their representatives.

"The relationship between the administration and student leadership is fairly good hence nurturing peaceful co-existence within the institution," said John Mogaka in an interview.

Mogaka added that the peaceful environment within the university is a result of the discipline of students who opt to use the right channels in airing their grievances rather than chaos.

Jeff Mitei who is the president of the student union said his leadership has introduced students to a new paradigm characterised by peace.

"The leadership in place understands the advantage of negotiation. We can negotiate on anything and is done our way," said Mitei.

"Currently, we are in the process of registering our union and nobody will be a stumbling block," he added.

Mitei acknowledges that university administrators do not listen to the needs of students hence leading to chaos.

"Every university management should understand that students are the priority and should listen to them," he said.

The president commended Kisii University management for always listening to their grievances.
