Kisii University main campus has been closed indefinitely after two days of students’ riots. The closure decision was made by the university senate who sat on Tuesday amidst tension in students’ residences. According to a memo released by the management, students are required to wait until another notice for resuming will be issued out. “All students are therefore asked to vacate the university premises by 3pm,” read the memo signed by Acting Registrar Academic Affairs, Dr Joash Kerongo. This comes after a two-day riot which began on Monday by students over the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system that required all students to clear their tuition fees by October 15, failure to which would result into automatic deferment until the following semester. According to Mr Vincent Moracha who was part of the senate from the department of Media Studies, the closure was meant to prevent more destruction of university property. The fee collection department had earlier been set ablaze by the rioting students which caused fear in the management.
