Kisii University held a thanksgiving service on Thursday morning in the main campus at the Dr. Sagini hall.
This semester’s theme was 'Building our lives on a rock' (Mathew 7:24-27). The guest speaker was Pastor Elisha Odero. Special prayers for the deceased members of staff and student were offered. Those present, were the vice chancellor, Moses Akama, deputy vice chancellor for academic affairs, Maurice Amutabi and deputy vice chancellor of registrar, Philip Owino.
Akama urged first years to abstain from drug and substance abuse. He added that HIV/AIDS was consuming many young people especially from 19-26 years and students should be careful and abstain from sexual activities.
''It is so sad that Kisii County is among the top 5 counties with the highest rate of HIV/AIDS. I urge students to abstain as this is the 100 percent protection measure,'' he said.
On the matter of security, he called upon students to be cautious and vigilant and to report any unusual, queer and suspicious people to the security. He further said that students should work collaboratively with security at the university and national police as it will be a safer way to handle terrorism issues.
The event convened together different religious denominations such as Catholic Action (CA), Christian Union (CU), Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Muslim community and Kings Outreach denomination.
