Kisii University Vice Chancellor Prof John Akama has urged people to register for a new E-waste Management program introduced by the institution.

Speaking on Thursday at the university during the launch of an E- waster that was led environmental Cabinet Secretary Judy wakhungu, Prof Akama urged prospective students to take an interest in the field of environmental management adding that the program offered at the institution was unique.

"We have started collecting electronic waste materials around the area now that we have the facility in place," he said.

Prof Akama said that the institution will be offering Diploma and Certificate programs in E-waste management.

“This is a chance to develop competencies in electronic waste management where need for trained professionals in the area is on the increase,” he said.

The VC termed the program as a major effort at conserving the environment and said it would go a long way in reducing potential hazards to the environment that are currently being posed by uninformed waste disposal.

He cautioned residents on the dangers of mercury and urged to bring any such materials to the university for safe disposal.

"We will be buying the waste materials from residents and dispose them off safely," he said.

Kisii Governer James Ongwae who was also in attendance said his administration would partner with the university to see the success of the program.
