Kisii University vice-chancellor PJohn Akama has warned night guards against neglecting their duties following incidents of insecurity that have been reported in the last one week.
Speaking on Monday during a management-student meeting, Prof Akama said most incidents that had been reported happened at evening or late mid-night hours, in which students did not get help from security details on duty.
He accused a session of the security officers of failing to execute their duties responsibility, besides warning them of a possible dismissal.
“We have received many insecurity incidents especially in the ending week and this is really shaming. We pay many guards to improve security in the institution but it’s surprising that our students are facing a lot of threats in and out of the institution. Those who are not working properly will be relieved of their duties,” he said.
Akama further warned security officers against manhandling students without giving them a fair hearing whenever handling a disciplinary case.
“Members of the security should also respect the rights of students by giving them a fair hearing. They ought to handle students properly if at all they want to retain their jobs,” Akama added.
This comes after a number of students accused the security officers of abandoning their duties at night, and subsequently subjecting students believed to be having disciplinary cases to harassing and manhandling.
