The Kenya Scouts Movement at Kisii University has taken lead on a mission to plant 20,000 tree seedlings at the university.
The event, which is sponsored by National Bank, was flagged off by Kisii University's vice chancellor Prof John Akama on Friday at the campus' farm. The tree seedlings were donated by National Bank Kisii Branch.
Mr Peter Siwolo, the Kisii regional branch manager for the bank, commended the scouts movement for its enthusiasm to preserve the environment.
Prof Akama urged students to plant trees everywhere in the country including their homes. "We all know trees are life. If we clear all trees then there is no life. I want young people to be environmentalists," he said.
The theme of the exercise was to promote peace through planting trees. All the seedlings are expected to be planted by Friday evening.
The scouts movement leader Mr Edgar Marumbu said that they are initiating programmes to plant trees in schools in Kisii County in a bid to save the environment from deterioration.
