A second year student at Kisii university escaped death narrowly on Tuesday night after he was caught with stolen items in one of the university hostels.
Daniel Mutua was suspected of stealing from his ex-girlfriend and her roommate after he broke into the room using a master key.
According to the victims, Mutua took their Sh2000 cash, valuable earrings, sprays and ATM cards.
"He had my key when we were dating but after we broke up I took it from him not knowing he had already made a another copy," the victim said.
Upon hearing the case, angry students stormed in Mutua's room and started beating him up.
"We shall not leave you until you provide all the goods you have stolen. You should not steal from a fellow comrade!" the angry mob barked.
With minimal resistance, Mutua produced all the stolen items including ten smart phones which were all believed to have been stolen from other people.
The suspect was rescued by Kisii university security guard, Hezron Bogonko, who promised to take action.
"This man has a criminal record in our office but this time round we will ensure the law takes its course. But remembered mob justice is against the law," said Bogonko.
Investigations into the incidence are underway.
