Kisii University students have raised concerns about insecurity in most parts of their residential areas.

Most of the complaints have been raised by students who live outside the school due to inadequate accommodation offered by the school. Some of them have been forced to live in the neighbouring villages such as Nyamage, Riverside, and Manoti, areas which are prone to insecurity.

It is alleged that some youth form gangs that terrorise the students and rob them outside the institution's compound.

“I can no longer go to the library at night because I was once stopped by a group of 3 armed men who threatened to beat me up if I made any noise. They then robbed me,’’ said John Kemei, a student at the university.

It is alleged that these thieves attack students when they come from classes or when they go out to buy supper.

“The police in this area are very slow in responding to emergencies. Last week, my friend was robbed and despite reporting to the authorities, no action was taken,” said Joyce Okoth, another student.

"I no longer go out to watch late night football matches since the area is insecure. A number of my colleagues have been attacked and I don't want to become a victim too," said David Otini, another student.

They now want the county government to intervene so as to boost security in the institution and the nearby areas.
