Students of the Kisii University will pay more than Sh14 million for damages before they resume classes next week.
Varsity’s management has asked over 8, 000 students to clear any outstanding fee balances and pay Sh1, 800 extra each as fine for destroying properties during the protests last week.
The university was closed last week on Wednesday following the riots and it advertised in the dailies that it will reopen on November 2, with the exception of second-year students who are on long holiday.
The varsity’s Public Relations Officer Pauline Nyamiaka said on Friday that second-year students will not be recalled until their holiday is over and will be exempted from paying the fine.
"Because they were not on campus at the time, they are not subject to the fine. All other students will be required to complete their fees as well as the fine when they report," Nyamiaka said.
The students burnt down the fee collection office, stoned offices and classrooms, destroyed kiosks and looted shops outside the institution during the riots.
They were protesting against the installation of the Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) System that is meant to hike fee payments.
