Kisii University will close five out of its 10 campuses as it had been ordered by the Commission for University Education (CUE) early in the year.
The most affected branches include Keroka, Nyamira and Ogembo and students have been asked to relocate to the main campus.
The institution attributed the move to the government's initiative to control unnecessary expansion of public universities.
Early this year, the university was ordered by the commission to close 10 out of 13 of its campuses in the Western, Nyanza and Rift Valley regions.
According to daily nation, the decision was rescinded and the institution given 12 months to strategise on implementing the directive.
The issues the institutions were required to address included recruitment and retention of quality lecturers, development of facilities and library resources.
