The university has spent thousands of shillings to set up the biogas plant.

Juma Sagini, the engineer in charge of the project, said that gas produced by the plant will be used in the students’ mess for cooking and in the lighting of the school whenever there is a power blackout.

“Currently the school is using firewood for cooking. This has made it very costly as tonnes of firewood are needed to sustain this large population of students who solely depend on the services they offer,” said Sagini.

The biogas plant has its waste from the students’ hostels that are within the campus, the kitchen waste from the students mess and all the waste from the farm department within the university.

“This project will help us reduce some sewage extraction cost as it will be turned into something useful. Furthermore, we are conserving our environment,” said Douglas Mung’are, the university’s head of halls and departments.

The students have congratulated the university as it has moved a step forward to improve the students’ standards of living.

“I thank the school on behalf of all the students for having thought of such a project which will improve our livelihood in the University,” said Roger Nyanumba, Kisii University President.

This biogas plant is expected to be fully functional by the beginning of April this year.

“We are all eager to see this come to a success,” said Onyango, a student.
