The county government of Kisii has been challenged to set aside more resources to ease the work of community health workers.

This call was made on Wednesday at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital where 200 bicyclers were donated to community health workers by African Medical Research and Foundation (Amref).

Fredrick Musiomi, a sub-county health worker from Marani, Kitutu Chache North Constituency, said community health workers face numerous challenges that need to be addressed by the county's department of health.

“There are many challenges we face so we urge the ministry of health to assist us and give the necessary support so that we can reach more people who need our help,” said Musiomi.

In addition, Musiomi urged residents to recognise the important role community health workers play in society saying that they are volunteers and thus require cooperation from residents so that many can benefit.

He says lack of recognition as certified health workers has been a major challenge to them but hopes that through the identification cards they have been promised they will be better placed to approach patients who they are unfamiliar to them.
