Vendors operating in Daraja Mbili market Kisii town have asked the county government of Kisii to set aside land for them to conduct their businesses peacefully.
The vendors led by Philip Ondieki said they are having difficulty times running their businesses because they are being harassed by county askaris and revenue collecting officers.
“Our businesses have not been running well due to the harassment we are undergoing. County askaris with the help of county revenue collectors have been chasing us claiming that we are operating illegally. We are urging the county government led by Governor James Ongwae to set aside land where we should set up our businesses,” he said.
Another vendor John Orogo accused county askaris for using force to move them from the streets in town.
"County askaris have been using a lot of force to move us from the streets when we refuse to give them bribes. As vendors we are urging the officers to respect us because we are also traders paying tax to the county government,” Orogo noted.
The traders have been in an on and off relationship with the County Government because of stalls that were meant to be built at the market but are yet to be put up.
