Riakemuma villagers in Semeta Sub County have come up with alternative source of fuel.
This comes as over dependence on charcoal as source of fuel in the rural areas continues threatening forest covers and environmental safety.
For now Riakemuma villagers are using maize cob to substitute charcoal which has been the main source of fuel in most households.
The villagers have found use of maize cobs as a source of energy for domestic use, readily available and more environment-friendly.
Speaking to this writer, Agnes Bosibori, a villager describes use of maize cobs, source of fuel, as an innovative environment-friendly source of fuel.
Bosibori notes that if maize cobs are well utilised deforestation rate will go down which translates to increased forest cover in the area.
"Use of maize cobs as an alternative to wood charcoal is an advantage. It helps to produce an environment-friendly source of energy for cooking, protecting forests from destruction," says Bosibori.
Moffat Nyaribo, a villager says, that maize cobs have advantage since it helps to conserve forest.
"It helps to observe cleanliness since they do not go to waste," notes Nyaribo.
