Campaigns to pressure Tanzanian authorities to release Kenyan businessman and politician have intensified with a section of youths from Kisii writing to President John Magufuli to authorise Don Bosco Gichana’s release.
Gichana has spent slightly over two years in an Arusha cell after being apprehended for alleged money laundering and the US State department also wants him extradited to face similar charges.
On Wednesday, Kisii County Youth Alliance Secretary Douglas Aboki confirmed writing to President Magufuli and took on Kenyan politicians for remaining mum over the issue.
“We have written to President Magufuli and we hope he will listen to our plea. This is not a small issue as many think because it’s a violation of human rights. We have seen little from Kenyan politicians but when it comes to non-issues, they are all over in the media,” Aboki said.
He said it was unlawful for Tanzanian authorities to continue holding Gichana without putting him on trial to defend himself.
“We are law abiding citizens and its shocking why he has been held for all these years without taken to trial. That is an indication that he is not guilty. We are sincerely requesting the President, being a man of action to act on the matter expeditiously,” he added.
The team also met former Tanzania President Jakaya Kikwete during his trip to the country and presented their argument yet little has been done since then.
