The Kisii University management will pay the entire fees for a second-year commerce student till she completes her education after getting her leg amputated during intervarsity games, a senior management member has said.

Speaking in his office on Wednesday, assistant dean of students Francis Monari said the management arrived at the decision as an appreciation of contribution by the student to the school’s volleyball team.

Ms Caroline Cherotich was severely injured last semester during intervarsity games in the institution and was subsequently amputated following an assessment by Kisii Teaching and Referral hospital doctors.

“I want to confirm that the institution is going to pay for her entire school fee till she graduates from the institution. She got the accident when playing for the school team and that is a sacrifice worth to be compensated even though we cannot restore her ability again,” Monari said.

He said the victim will also be expected to work with the university’s games department due to her relentless passion in sports.

“People expected her to quit sports completely but she has been closely working with our games department. She will for the time being work as one of the officials in the games department so that she can sustain her stay in campus,” he added.

Cherotich lauded the institution’s humility and vowed to bring her expertise in the game to see the team winning major tournaments.

“It was my wish to see our team winning major tourneys and I will always work with them to achieve it. It's an honor to be recognised by the institution,” she said.
