The Kisumu County government has finally appointed George Akongo as the new county director of communications following weeks of uncertainties and court orders. The appointment of Akongo, who has been in office for nearly two weeks in a holding capacity, has created mystery over the fate of former director Merritta Ombuor. Ombuor was reportedly sacked through a letter written by County Secretary Humphrey Nakitare but she moved to court to challenge her dismissal. The court eventually reinstated her back to office only to find the office locks changed. She has been withdrawing her monthly salary without performing any duties to the county since her office was out of bounds to her. The office of governor has in the meantime invited the media for a breakfast meeting on Tuesday to acquaint them with the new officer. An excerpt from the media invite reads, “You have been invited to attend a breakfast familiarisation meeting with the County Director of Communications on Tuesday the 4th of November 2014 at 8am in the boardroom 4th floor”. The governor’s office has come under fire for apparent lack of information flow to the media owing to the fact that the communication office was incapacitated. Efforts to get in touch with Ombuor were fruitless as she is said to be at her rural home in Karachuonyo following the death of her mother.
