The Kisumu County government has been asked to champion Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision (VMMC) among residents to reduce the high HIV and Aids prevalence in the region.

Kisumu Medical and Education Trust (KMET) Director Peter Apamo notes that the county’s HIV prevalence rate was among the highest in the country and said that there was need to put the necessary measures in place to reduce it.

Speaking during the closing of a lakeside health seminar held at Kisumu Hotel on Sunday, Apamo challenged the Health CeC, Dr Elizabeth Ogaje, to sensitise the lakeside county residents more on the need to go for the male cut.

“Circumcision plays a major role in reducing HIV prevalence. This is evident in counties where the residents and locals have embraced the cut,” he said.

Apamo added, “Take a good example of counties where the cut is part of their culture and you will realise that the male cut helps.”

Speaking during the event, KMET Youth coordinator Emmanuel Oyier said that the male cut reduces the chances of HIV infection and hence there was need to ensure that enough sensitisation was done so that the spread of the deadly virus could be reduced.
