Kisumu County Assembly on Tuesday debated a motion calling for the establishment of sub counties rescue centres for Gender Based Violence survivors in the county.
The motion was moved by nominated MCA Farida Salim and was seconded by Nyakach North MCA Petronila Omondi.
Salim told the house that the county is recording high number of gender based violence survivors who should be taken care of in the centres.
She said the common cases of gender based violence include rape, incest, sodomy and wife battering.
“Madam Speaker, survivors of these acts are very vulnerable and more prone to repeated attacks as there is nowhere they can seek refuge or proper medical attention,” she said.
Salim said the situation calls for the county government to ensure such rescue centres are established to help the survivors who are mostly traumatised by such encounters in their lives.
However, Nyakach Central MCA Elijah Omondi opposed the motion saying setting up the centres in the seven sub counties is very costly.
Omondi says the motion will be passed but just like other motions it will not be implemented because of lack of funds.
Minority leader Joshua Auko dismissed the argument noting that funds can be sourced from even developed countries noting money from the county government should not be the only source.
Kaloleni ward representative Prisca Misachi said the centres can be housed in any health facilities across the county.
Misachi said the county government has enough trained health personnel who can take care of the survivors in terms of medical and counselling.
The house adopted the motion and Deputy Speaker Pamela Omino referred it to the children, culture and community services ministry for further research.
