Kisumu County government has petitioned the Senate from gazettment of the controversial Agriculture Fisheries and Food Authority (AFFA), terming it irregular.
Led by Gabriel Ochieng', they said the Act is going to affect and gag farmers from actualizing their dreams on economic empowerment.
According to the petition, the Act will indirectly promote the infux of sugar in the local market.
Ochieng said the Act put to a risk the closure of sugarcane industries within the Nyando sugar belt region that has over 40,000 people heavily relying on it.
Ochieng said if forced into people, the Act will pose a great risk to the economy n livelihood of kisumu county people.
Majority Leader Samuel Ong'ou, who represents Masogo/Nyang'oma Ward where cane is grown, said the Act is irregular and must not be enforced.
Ongow said the Act was legislated before the new constitution was passed, which has now devolved fully agriculture.
“Agriculture is no longer a national function and we cannot allow the national government to make such draconian laws for us,” said Ong'ou.
The assembly now wants the Senate to refuse the implementation of the Act since it will threaten closure of sugar industries in the county which will render thousands unemployed.
