Kisumu County based Bodaboda operators have been challenged to observe laid down Traffic Rules and regulation to curb the number of accidents involving the operators.
Speaking In Kondele, an official from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Gerishom Michemi said that it is worrying that Bodaboda related deaths are on the rise and it is due to neglecting simple rules.
“If nothing is done immediately, then deaths caused by Bodaboda operators through road accidents will be uncontrollable disaster, unless we observe the rules. Most of us do not follow simple regulations such as carrying one passenger at a time and putting on a helmet,” said Michemi.
Michemi who was addressing Bodaboda Welfare Groups from Kisumu County claimed that at least 10 Bodaboda operators die daily in the country through accidents while other many cases go unreported.
He said that the first step to observing the Traffic Rules and regulations is going to a professional driving school.
“Most of Bodaboda operators do not even know the rules they are supposed to follow, simply because they never attended any driving school. Most of us learn how to ride within hours and the next time we are on the roads,” said Michemi.
He also challenged the public to assist in ensuring that Bodaboda operators adhere to the set Traffic Rules by ensuring that they are provided with a helmet and reflector jackets before they begin their ride to any destination.
Michemi added that NTSA is out to crack whip on rogue motorcyclists who do not observe Traffic Rules.
