A 30-year-old man was on Friday sentenced to serve three years in prison by a Kisumu chief magistrate court after being found guilty of theft charges.
Jackson Awiti was convicted following the offence he is said to have committed on diverse dates between August 2013 and January 2014 while working as a cashier at a hardware in Kisumu.
The court heard that the accused used to collude with other staff members to steal the goods worth Sh1,000.
The goods stolen include cement, iron sheets, pain, fertilizer among other goods.
In passing her judgment, chief magistrate Esther Maina said that the accused had to pay for breaking the trust of his employer.
"A cashier position is build on trust because for the obvious reasons, according to evidence presented before this court, the accused is guilty and therefore he has to pay for breaking the trust," said Maina.
In his defence, Awiti, who had earlier denied the charges, said that he should be pardoned because he is the sole breadwinner for his family.
"Your honour I highly regret what happened, and if I go prison my family risks starving because nobody will be there to provide for them," said a teary Awiti.
Magistrate Maina, however, allowed him to appeal the decision within the next 14 days.
