Traders in Kisumu County have a reason to smile after the Kisumu City Management rolled out a new project aimed at improving infrastructure and public facilities within the famous Kibuye open air Market.
Speaking in Kisumu on Monday during the official launch of the road improvement network within Kibuye market, Kisumu City Manager Ms Doris Ombara said the multi-million initiative is funded by the World Bank in collaboration with the Kisumu County Government.
“Amongst the targeted for immediate improvement is the tarmacking of various routes within the market, including the Kibuye Wholesale stretch, as well as the Highway Primary- mama Ngina- Winam court corridor,” said Ms Ombara.
She said the Kibuye wholesale section is set to undergo a complete overhaul.
The city manager dismissed claims by a section of Kibuye traders that there is a plan to evict them from the open air market, insisting that ongoing plan is to improve service provision.
She affirmed that no trader will be evicted in the process.
Kibuye is the biggest open air market in Kisumu. It serves traders from as far as Busia, Kakamega, Homa Bay, Kisii, Nyamira, Siaya and Bungoma counties.
The official market day is Sunday, but traders in Kisumu access the market on a daily basis.
