Ombara said fumes from the dumpsite may be leading to lifestyle diseases such as cancer.

"The fumes that come from the Kochak dumpsite affects the health [of] area residents and the businesses around it," said the acting city boss said.

Speaking at the Coca-Cola cleaning exercise at the Kisumu bus park, Ombara said political interests were standing in the way of her efforts to improve the area.

"I know powerful people in politics are using Kachok dumpsite as a benchmark to show that the city manager and the governor are not working," she said.

"You cannot be an obstacle, rebelling the projects. We have to change our attitude."

Ombara said practical cleaning involved sweeping and the fire brigade flushing the drainage system in the Kisumu bus park and the market.

"We are interested in the welfare and standards of cleanliness in the bus park as well as the market," she said.
