Kisumu City residents are breathing a sigh of relief after Governor Jack Ranguma said that plans are underway to set up a new dumpsite.
Ranguma said that the county will decommission Kachok dumpsite soon after a new piece of land for the new dumpsite has been acquired.
Speaking to journalists in Kisumu on Thursday, Ranguma said studies are ongoing on all prospective sites and the final proposed site for the sanitary landfill will be announced for public knowledge.
“I am happy to report to you that the process of getting a new piece of land for the dumpsite is now in its finals stages. This will pave way for the decommissioning of Kachok and the provision of better waste management options,” said Ranguma.
City manager Doris Ombara said that the project will be financed by both private partners and the county government.
Ombara further added that her office was optimistic that the landfill was the best alternative for waste management saying it would offer ways for profit-making activities from the dumpsite.
“The Kisumu Urban Project has an allocation of 1.5 billion for investing in a landfill,” said Ombara.
She added that the landfill will be ready for use 15 months after ratification, adding that nothing would go to waste once the landfill is up and running.
