Speaking to the press during a civil society groups meeting to address land grabbing in Kisumu Malaika Foundation Programme Coordinator Kevin Ogema said the County Lands Board should have been formed and already executing its mandate.

"Why are we not having the Lands Board in Kisumu? Don’t they have resources to employ professionals to perform that function," wondered Ogema.

He said that if there is no County Lands Board then the National Lands Commission cannot be devolved to Kisumu. "As a result the communities are suffering because they cannot air their views," said Ogema.

He added: "We are calling on the county government to be at the forefront to address the land grabbing, illegal allocation of land and provision of land in Kisumu County."

He said Malaika Foundation, Mazingira Institute and Community Initiative Action Group will campaign for the rights of communities who are victims of land grabbing.

"We stand very firm as civil society organisations to administer the rights of the community especially the vulnerable communities that have been protected, secured and promoted in Kisumu," said Ogema.

He said the way forward to curb land grabbing in Kisumu involves engaging the county government and communities affected.
