Kisumu police officers will soon have six new motorbikes to tame insecurity and bring order in the boda boda sector.
The county AP commandant, Joseph Keitany, said the motorcycles will be used by the officers during the day and night patrols.
Keitany said most robbers use motorcycles to commit crime and get away with it and it has been difficult to pursue such criminals using police vehicles.
He said 12 police officers who will be using the motorbikes have been identified and will be taken for training in Nairobi soon.
He said one motorbikes will have two officers and the training will entail subduing the criminals while on a moving motorcycle.
“The motorbikes will soon arrive and the officers who have been identified will take over the patrols within the city centre and estates,” he said.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Wednesday, Keitany said some boda boda cyclists always cause accidents and instead of stopping, speeds away noting that the new police unit being formed will deal with such cases.
He said police patrols have been intensified in Kisumu city and mostly crime prone areas.
“These are measures we are putting in place to ensure the city is safe and we will not stop there,” he said.
Keitany said swoops on illicit alcohol will also continue and lauded the officers who nabbed the 127 suspects over the weekend.
