Members of the Kisumu County Assembly have been accused of reducing agriculture allocation each financial year.
Speaking during a farmers’ field day at the Maseno Agricultural Training Centre (ATC) on Wednesday, Kisumu County Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries Henry Obade said MCAs were to blame for little funding that goes to the agriculture sector.
"Every year, we sit down to plan and propose adequate funding for the Ministry of Agriculture but when these recommendations go to the County Assembly, members normally reduce the proposed allocation," he said.
He said that it was becoming difficult to fund projects geared towards fighting food insecurity in the county, with the minimal funding.
Mr Obade said that the agriculture sector only gets 4% of the entire Kisumu county budget each year when it should be getting 10% allocation every financial year.
Over 200 farmers from various parts of Kisumu County attended this year's field day.
Maseno ATC organises farmers’ field days once every year, where farmers come out in large numbers to learn some of the best farming practices from fellow farmers and other agriculture stakeholders.
Kisumu North West ward representative Samuel Otieno Ombogo was among those who attended the function.
