Kisumu County Government has appealed to the boda boda operators to give them time to study the Finance Bill 2017.

The operators were planning to hold a major demonstration in Kisumu streets Thursday, if the county fails to withdraw the Bill.

Speaking on a local Radio Station in Kisumu on Wednesday morning, Kisumu Deputy Governor Dr Mathews Owili told the operators to hold on the demonstration and wait for direction from the county government.

Owili said that Governor Prof Anyang Nyong’o who is currently outside the country will address the issue once he arrives.

“Right now the Governor is outside the country and I have spoken to him and he assured me that he will address the issue conclusively once he is back,” he said.

The Deputy Governor said the Governor will not assent to the Bill before taking into considerations issues being raised by the operators.

“Governor Nyong’o is not mad to just wake up and assent to any Bill that is generated by the County Assembly, he will have to go through it and look at the demerits and merits,” he said.

However most of the callers during the morning radio show demanded that the boda boda operators pay tax.

“If the county government back tracks on this then I will mobilize hawkers and other traders to boycott paying taxes. Because what is the essence of taxing other sectors and leaving other sectors,” said a caller.
