Kisumu County Governor Jack Ranguma has announced that his government has approached the State to transfer sugar factories within Nyando sugar belt to the county.
Ranguma said his government is fully aware of the challenges farmers experience in the cane growing zones in the county.
He said the three sugar factories, Miwani, Chemelil and Muhoroni, should be transferred to the county for proper management.
“If the factories are under our watch then we will ensure our farmers get value for their money,” he said.
The governor said there are strategic investors who are ready to improve on the lives of cane farmers by restructuring the three sugar factories.
Addressing Kisumu County Assembly during the official opening, Ranguma said the county will not only rely on agriculture.
He said agriculture alone is not capable of uplifting the locals from the yoke of poverty.
Ranguma said his government will provide opportunities for employment and wealth creation as he focuses on empowering industries and promote trade in the county.
In his speech to the assembly, the Governor touched on many issues key among them information and technology where he announced that the much awaited free Wi-Fi will be rolled out soon.
