Kisumu Medical and Education Trust Director Peter Apamo has asked the county government to build a mental asylum that would take care of the mentally ill persons.

Speaking to our reporter, Apamo said that the mentally ill are also in the category of Persons living With Disabilities (PWDs), and asked Nominated MCA representing PWDs Caroline Agwanda to ensure that the welfare of the mentally ill persons was looked into by the county government.

“The county government should allocate funds towards the development and welfare of the mentally challenged in the society as they are also falling in the category of the Persons living With Disabilities,” said Apamo.

Kisumu-based Human Rights activist Killen Omondi challenged the government to allocate funds towards the construction of a modern county mental asylum, where all mentally challenged residents can be taken.

Omondi further challenged the County Executive for Education Jennipher Kere to ensure that mentally challenged students and pupils also get bursaries from the county government.

“These people, once their disability is correctly handled and addressed can make a better futures for themselves,” said Omondi.

“They are also residents of Kisumu and should be treated fairly during the allocation of bursary from the county government,” he added.
